Alot to cover in this race. Overall this is probably the worse organized race I have EVER race in. The run course was the WORSE ever. Was not marked and was not monitored. Apparently the original winners (1st and 2nd) cut the run course short. After emailing a few people both those guys were DQd. I was 4th, after the DQ I was 2nd OVERALL. :D Here are a few details.
RACE SUMMARY:
Swim:
After all of this the swim was the best swim I have EVER done. Water was beautiful!!!! Could see for at least 25+ feet. Was the fastest swim I feel Ive ever had. The pace overall was not as fast as I felt I swam but hey...
They did a TT type start. Went off 17th. Hopped into the water and immediatly started passing people. Fell into a really really smooth pace. Only one person passed me and I think I ended up passing him as well...My sighting went REALLY well. Never felt like I was off course. It was nice being able to see where I was going and being able to see the ground. Was alot of cool stuff in the water. Saw some turtles and fish. Headed towards the shore and came out nice and smooth. when I ran out I started pulling off my suit and headed into T1. I knew I was a way up there when I got into T1.
T1:
T1 was ok. Not as fast as it should have been. Saw someone I had met pre swim in T1 and we basicly had a little convo in T1. Probably shouldnt have done that. : - / But was still fast. :)
Bike:
Now this bike was a little hillier than I anticipated. Pulled out of transition and was moving fassst. Felt really good. When I pulled out of the parking lot I look up to see the cones directing us where to go. I of COURSE go outside the cones because no one was directing anything. Was rediculous. Got down into the aero position and was on my way. The course felt good. Was nice and smooth. I didnt see ANYONE on the bike course for the first 15mins. Finally after about 15min I saw the guy up ahead of me. Man did I want to catch him. Kept pushing all the way to the turnaround. Right before the turnaround I get passed by this guy that was just flying. I thinking he was one of the guys that cut the course. Turned around and passed the guy I had been chasing. On the way back started passing the people coming the other direction. There were some pretty burly downhills that I just flew down. About 10min from the end it of course started raining :( Didnt have any sunglasses on so it was really stinging my face. Took the two turns we had to take and came right up to the parking lot again. As Im about to get to the parking lot i took A WRONG TURN. UGH. I was getting soo freaking tired of this course. It was pathetic. No direction at all. Im pretty sure I mumbled a few words I shouldnt have...
Came into T1 and saw mom right there. Was nice to have her there. Overall the bike was good. Great to start but really started feeling it towards the end. Was pushing really hard. Possible my swim was too hard.
T2:
T2 was wayy smooth. 33 seconds. No complaints here.
Run:
What do I say about this run? The worse monitored and marked course Ive ever been on. Came out of T2 and started the run. People were shouting like I was in 1st so that was nice. The run headed towards the golf course and we hopped onto the cart path that was NOT paved. Turns out this whole freaking thing was a trail run. Maybe 5% of the run was on pavement, and the time I was on pavement it was really really slippery. When I got onto the run course I thought I saw someone just a ways ahead of me...Then a golf cart got right in front of me and started pacing me. Quickly realized the course was not measured at all.... well it was measured... i guess. Just NOT marked. :( The halfway point we came back past transition and everyone was yelling. Was great. There was my mom just shouting :) Everyone thought I was in first because there was no one else that had come through at that point. Apparently those other two guys had already cut the course. I did see someone walking that looked like the guy that had passed me on the bike. Continued on the second half of the run and headed out towards this baseball field. The whole second loop I had NO IDEA if I was even on the course. I went one direction on the run loop and the other guy i could see went the other direction. Once I got out to the far side of the baseball field there was an aid station and it was UNMANNED w/ accelerade. Which was cool, but ReALLY not cool that it wasnt manned. Rediculous. Came back from the loop and joined the course back to the finish. The other guy I could see came right up in front of me after th loop, and I tried to catch him into the finish. Started to catch him but didnt have enough left to get him. Crossed the line thinking I probably had 2nd. :) Was a little dissapointed once I crossed the line... but still felt I could have won overall :D
Post Race:
Found mom and talked to her a bit. She let me know some people finished about TEN MINUTES ahead of me. I told her that was impossible. Turns out those were the two guys that cheated. Packed my bag up in transition and waited for results. When I took my bag out of transition w/ my bike there was NO ONE there to check me out!!!!!! OMG. Someone could have just walked out w/ my bike. I will never do that race again due to that reason alone. Ok post race festivities.
After going back to the hotel to shower and what not me and mom went down to the San Marcos river to do some swimming. Felt awesome and was SOOOO clear. :) Was a fantastic trip. Nice and relaxing.
