2008 Elite License Qualifications

Has anyone seen the new 2008 elite license qualification standards?!?! All I can say is wow. At first when I read them I was a little let down because I started working last year to get my elite as most everyone knows. Just recently I decided thats not what I want, or need to be focusing on right now. None the less I was dissapointed to see that those races that went towards my elite now mean nothing....

Something I had been debating w/ was whether or not I deserved/earned my elite. The new standards make me excited because I know good and well that if I qualify for my elite I will have earned it... These standards are tough, and I guarantee cut the number of "elites" by 3/4s in the next few years as current elites licenses expire. Obviously USAT agreed that the old standards were making it too easy for people to qualify. For me.. finishing top 3 amatuer OVERALL at Buffalo Springs is close to impossible...

I think my best chance is finishing top 3 amatuer in an IM...I looked at IMAZ overall from 2007 and the 3rd place amatuer (21st including pros) finished in 9:37:00. Definitly out of the question for next year... Next year ill be racing IMAZ to get to Kona... not qualify for my elite. All I need for Kona is sub 10:30... if its anything like last year. I think by now everyone knows my goal time is anything sub 10.

All in all I think the new standards for getting an elite license are a good change... and will definitly make the license that much more coveted.

To check out USATs reasoning behind this and the new qualification standards just click here.

Im happy they've obviously realized that just because a race has 500+ people doesnt mean that the competition merits an elite license.

An elite??

So. Ive had something on my mind the past few days, and sooner or later im going to have to think about... or even more... make a decision about it. Something I started working towards last season was getting my elite license. So far ive 2 out of 3 races that it requires to get it. My third race is going to CapTex 2008. Now I dont want to jump to any conclusions, but lets assume I get my top 8 there and now I have my 3 I need to get my elite.

Lately ive been debating whether I really want/deserve an elite license. Personally I feel far from being "elite". I feel like ive taken the easiest possible route... (by getting my top 8s at easier.. local races, not bigger national races. i.e. 70.3s, things like that) For example I drove all the way to Houston this past October to race Try Andys. A SUPER sprint that I knew would 500+ people. I took 4th overall.... and im going be honest... It wasnt that hard to take a top 5. So heres the question Im asking? Do i really deserve an elite license? Lets face the facts... Say I do get it, then what happens? I know.... I get my ass whomped by other elites. The upside of this? Racing against faster people can only make you faster right? Well... at least I think so anyways.

This season my final ranking for the SMW triathlon region was 97th overall, and 6th age group. Does that sound deserving of an elite license? Definitly doesnt sound like it....

So... lately ive been thinking instead of focusing on getting that Elite... maybe I should focus on winning my age group for the SMW region, and trying to get my regional elite ranking. (top 40 overall regionally) Of course before all of this everyone knows I want to Kona qualify.

I think the only reason ive been wanting to get my elite is so that I can say... I actually have an elite license, and of course so that I can push myself harder. But we all know that you dont need an elite license to make yourself a better athlete. I think maybe waiting on the license and focusing on the SMW age group title and Kona makes way more sense for where I am right now.
Who knows... maybe someday I can take my age group at Kona.....
I can only train.. and hope so.

New addiction...

Its called BT. lmao.
www.beginnertriathlete.com

Ive started loggin all my workouts over there. Gives me all kinds of data/graphs that are really beneficial. Great website, especially for the serious athlete looking to improve :) .. and even better for the athelete that needs some motivation.. (not me) lol

White Rock is this weekend and I'm way excited. Really sucks that it sold out, but im still looking forward to getting a hard run in. Im ready to see where I am mentally and physically. This weekend should be a great test. Ill post my race report on here sunday or monday.

Beards....

So the workouts lately have been supreme. (Is supreme an adjective?) Ive been getting alot of LSD, and this weekend will be no different. Im excited to see how my body reacts and im even more excited for White Rock next weekend...

Speaking of White Rock they capped the race this year at 15K.... Guess who didnt get in? Ha. Yea... My procrastination finally got the best of me. Its very irritating to me that there were no updates what so ever on the WR website as to the fact that the race was almost full. Im assuming they capped it due to the whole incident in Chicago... but lets face the facts... the race is in DECEMBER... Anyways, I just might happen to be going out for a 13.1 mile run, on the White Rock course, the same morning of the race... just maybe... **wink wink**

I had a little taper planned for next weekend so I could put down at least a 1:30 next weekend. I think im still going to aim for a sub 7 pace, but nothing below 6:45/m.

I just lost all my concentration so back to "work" i go.

:D

Treadmills? No way....

So... Plan for today? 1hr - 8ish mile run. Start at around an 8min pace, work it down to 7:30s. Nothing crazy. Wake up around 3p and hear rain :( Well.. Ill run and cycle in sub anything temps.. but I wont run or cycle in wet rain. Sickness isnt worth it.

So... What do I do? Well, im NOT a fan of treadmills. But... I had to do what I had to do. So I grab my gear swallow a powerbar and head to the Cedar Hill rec center.

I hate working out indoors SO bad that I pay $5 everytime I go up there for a one day pass instead of buying unlimited passes for ______ amount each month/3 months. I get to the rec center and change then head over to the treadmills :( :( :( :( :(

I set everything up like im about to do a marathon. Lol. 2 waterbottles, ipod, towel, etc etc. I start the stupid machine and phsych (sp?) myself up. (before I continue, know that Im doing this run in my Asics, NOT my newtons. Mainly becaues they say Newtons arent made for Treadmills and the benefits would be none....So I decided id try my gel landriths again... Which ive run in the 3yrs previous to this past month)

I literally hop on and start running. It was at a 10min pace so I quickly brough it down to 8min/mile... First thought? This is WAY uncomfortable and I bet I look like a RETARD. :( It felt SOOOO akward. I was trying to run on my forefoot and was but just couldnt get comfortable.

I literally quit after no more than 30seconds.

I got off the treadmill, packed my stuff and left.

To do what you ask?

Go home..put on my Newtons... and run for an hr. After my hr run in the sub 40degree temps I felt awesome. It didnt rain too hard and I felt that much stronger for suckin it up and getting it done.

I will never run in anything but Newtons ever again.

Turkey Trot Day...

There is nothing I look more forward to each year than the turkey trot. This year I ran w/ Scott and we took it super easy. Nice relaxed fun pace, which is always the case at this run :) I think last year I ran a 9:00 + pace and the year before that probably a 10min pace. Apparently they put me in the F20-24 age group! lmao. I guess 13th in that age group is better than 66th in mine :)

Trying to actually race that run is retarted.

If you're not Kenyan or your VO2max isnt 80+ you're not going to place :)

P.S.- I <3 my Newtons.

ONE quick rant :)
Im SOOO tired of people bitching about the trot course and saying its hard w/ "big" hills. There are no "big" hills... Maybe some slight inclines but seriously... :)
Go run IMLP and youll see hills <3

Rant over.

Got there and found out it was the wrong place for me to vote :( None the less have to work tonight so no voting for me today... : - (

Also, I tried to pace myself on these sprints alot better today. Didnt feel like I was going to die when I was done so thats a plus. Trying to back off the speed just a bit and keep focusing on my base... But I dont want forget that hurt... So im still trying to throw in at least one "speed" session a week if you can even call it that...

The run was soooo much better than I was thinking it would be. Miles just kept getting easier and easier. The longer I ran the easier it got.

Saturday (11.03.07)

*** Day OFF ***

That was fun. Nice set. What was that? 7-8ish + days in a row. Feel like im getting stronger already. Just getting back in the mindset of training w/ a goal. If anyone ever wants to try and get focused... just register for an Ironman and see what happens... :)

On another note. IMFL was today. Id like to throw a congratulations out to my friend Tylers dad! A 10:36? How awesome. He took an hour off his first IM time. Congrats again to him. Now lets just hope for the roll down :)

So tommorow at noon registration opens for IMFL. This is the first IM im going to try and register for w/ the registration process and im not sure about how easy its going to be for me to get in.... Hopefully other people were discouraged into not driving down there to register so that way there will be more slots open online. **Rant time** I mean seriously. Who has the money to fly down to Florida JUST to register for a race???!?!? IRONMANS cost ENOUGH as is. I can understand NA sports position, but its starting to get out of control. Ive found a descrepency online as to what time it actually opens. Im going to go w/ 12noon race site time. Ill update tommorow w/ whether im racing IMFL next year or not. None the less... If I get into Kona at IMAZ i will be withdrawing from Florida... if I get in of course.Just registered for Lake Stevens 70.3. So that ones official.

So far for next year:
-IMAZ
-Lake Stevens 70.3
I was just googling IMFL. Heres a photo that came up. One of my favorite IM photos ever. For some reason its very motivating to me...

So. Woke up and thought of a hundred reasons not to workout today. Then I remembered I have tommorow off :) Total recovery. So I got out there and got it done. First 10 miles took awhile to get going but the runs felt fantastic. I feel so strong running right now. Everytime Im out there doing this 2+ hr workouts I doubt myself and wonder if im starting too early. it just feels weird training at these kind of speeds w/ this volume this "late" in the year.... I need to keep in mind that IMAZ is literally only 5.5 months away.... Nice... easy... longer miles. 50 plus mile ride sunday. Im excited :)

So I took the "new" road bike out. Ive been craving some hills for SOOO long. So today I finally got my share. Went out and did the Cedar HILL route. First off it was WINDY.... and I mean WINDY..... Felt pretty good to start. Hills were a little tougher than Id hoped they would be but thats what I should have expected since I havent ridden hills like that in weeks. Did alot of adjusting w/ the saddle angle and seat post height. Once I started fiddling w/ it I just couldnt get comfortable again. : - / Planning on heading to B&B to have Jeff give me a his fit. Also couldnt get the new computer to work... not sure what it is.. probably the batt. About an hr thirty into the ride started getting a litte burn. Most likely from the lack of hills ive been doing recently.

Swim was GREAT until the last 75 set. I started cramping hard. Obviously from the hill ride id finished just an hr earlier. Gotta up the banana intake :D Wish id done a 500 CD or something.... Next time...

Heres a vid of me on the way home... about mile 30ish... Solid tail wind :)

IMAZ

So....
Ive been thinking about IMAZ alot lately. Trying to picture it in my mind... occasionaly playing the race through my head... time over time while falling asleep.

This season I've learned alot... One worth mentioning...

I think ive finally "started" to learn how to push through barriers... that we "think" exist. However random it may be... I did a small 5K in Waxahachie a few weeks ago and actually won overall. No crazy times here... but a PR for me of 17:40. (5:40/m) Twice in this race I pushed back my doubts and just dug deeper. When I thought I had nothing I pulled something else out...

Now with that said... Something I dont think ive developed as much as I want is dealing with the pain. The point where you hurt.. dont feel good... and probably just want to stop. Thats something im going to work on for IMAZ. Dealing with the hurt.

Ive stolen this pic from a few people...

Everytime I feel like I cant do it... Or I think I cant push through the pain... Im going to look at this photo... and remember... DEAL with it.

Kona 2008.

IMAZ... 177 days.

Thursday (10.18.07)

*** Day OFF ***

Ugh. No workout :( Im actually sad about that today. In between classes I checked the work schedule and saw I wasnt on. Awesome I thought... I can get a bike and swim in :) Maybe a run too... Called Scott and invited him to the pool later. None the less checked the schedule one more time when I got home and saw I was working :- O

Had been messing around and class got out late so it was already pretty late and I needed to nap before work. So...... Nothing today. Tommorow its either an hr run or hr bike... Im leaning towards the hr run :)

Newton update:
Back ordered!! :( I guess I'm not the only person that wants these shoes. Not getting shipped till the end of October. Well worth the wait... im sure :)

Wednesday (10.17.07)

*** Day OFF ***

What?! Another day off? Yep :) Planned on swimming or running... or something today, but I was pretty busy. Almost went to Katy trail and ran around 10pm... Decided that may be kinda dangerous.. plus ive been skipping out on my weight lifting :- / .... Ha. bad joke.

Went to my dads work and we got busy painting the Allez. (road bike) I decided on Flat Black a long time ago...Of course w/ a nice black and white theme. I want to go as Euro as possible with out looking tacky. The flat black of course is for a stealthy look. :) Here are a few little sneak peeks of whats soon to come... Sunday ill start puting her back together.

Before photo. All sanded down:
Post photo.. looking stealthy....

Fantastic run. Of course not planned because nothing is planned this week :) I got done w/ school and felt like running so thats what I did. Didnt go out w/ any kind of planned pace. First mile was sub 8 and I felt wonderful so I just kept pushing the pace. The sub 7 miles felt perfect. I love a 6:50 pace...

*** Day OFF ***

I actually had at least a swim planned for today. Turns out I really didnt have time and in the end didnt feel like doing it. Its my "off" week so Im doing what I want. And you know what? Its absolutly wonderful. Ived worked hard all season and now im on the verge of starting IMAZ training.... I want to go into it fresh and I think this is a good way :) Its getting colder outside... and I like that. Those long miles may be tough in 30degree weather... but you know what? That wont stop me... Because KONA is on the mind.

In other news:
ha. I ordered some NEWTONS. Ha. There is so much talk about these shoes. Ive been playing around on the website and talked to a few owners and finally gave in the other morning at work. I think this is a good time to try something new if im going to. The long miles for IMAZ start soon and I want to start setting myself up for race day now. Still looking into some apparel to race in.... The tri brief is an option... but I LOVE the Speedo Fast Skin one piece..... ugh. Input?

That's another one for the Elite license. 2 down, 1 to go. So about the race.... Obviously little tiny w/ lots of people. What would I have rather been racing? The Dallas Open... But Try Andys was guaranteed 500+... and thats what I need/want. Overall it was a solid race. Same time last year would have won it... I guess thats just how it goes. Next 500+ race will probably be CapTex... Problem here is I REALLY want to do the oly.. but If I do the oly ill probably get OWNED. Why risk not getting my elite and having to do 3 more 500+ races? Ugh... Give me some input.

On to the RR.

Funny workout today. I thought my warm up was enough but when I started riding I had alot more lactic acid much quicker than normal. Not sure if my workouts this week have been a little harder than necessary but my legs did feel strong despite. Came out of the saddle a few times and felt good. Only do two sprints ... Four definitly would have been too much this close to andys. No excuses. I just wanna race. Should I give away my goal paces for this weekend??? ha... No chance :)

Kona is less than 7hrs AWAY!!!
GO NORMANN.

Left calf is still way tight. Feels like I ran a 5K :( :( :( Applying Icy Hot and stretching when I get free time. Workout tommorow? Not so sure... gonna do something. Some light speedwork on the bike is the plan...

Just got a hotel in Sugarland for Tri Andys. Super close to packet pick up and the race site. Still a shame its so close to disgusting Houston :( ha.

Didnt plan on swimming hard today. Showed up and John and Jane thought up these fun ladder sets... I thought yea... I could use some speedwork. Anyways, they were a blast... but pushed me pretty hard. I lead on the last ladder up and tried hard to push the pace. My left calf cramped HARD. Im now thoroughly applying ICY HOT and stretching alot to make sure its gone by Sunday. None the less I cant wait to start applying the workouts to my IMAZ build up. Sub 1hr swim here I come.

The brick was really enjoyable..
Im feeling stronger and stronger on my bike everyday. At the end of the first bike I was thinking, "Man.. i dont think I should or can push too much harder on the next bike..." And then I did... Sub 27. I took the runs SUPER easy, and pushed as close to race pace as I could get and stay comfortable.

On a side note... The road bike is still in pieces. Hopefully I can get the "details" finished early next week and ready to ride mid next week. :)

Way more consistent today. I wasnt dying on the last set so thats a plus. This stretch of 2 miles is not flat... I realize that the more I sprint on it..

Just gone done w/ my bike sprints. Im a disspointed again w/ the splits. I dont know if its the face that I did a HARD track workout yesterday or what but I dont have the stamina to push a 4:22 like I was doing just two weeks ago.... The best im doing now is 4:37... None the less they are alot more consistent than they were...I post the splits tonight at work.

Well. That was fun/interesting. If you read below my scheduled swim didnt happen today :( So I decided to push this workout a bit harder and see what I can do when I just do a few 400s like I used to do. The first was obviously wayy slow compared to the others. I wont lie... I was dyin on the last 400. But it looks good on paper right? Anyways, good run. Solid sets and im not sore. Normally when I push those hard 400s I can feel it. Not today.

* * *

Well... I was just about to start getting ready for my swim this afternoon and I thought to myself... I better double check the times for mondays. Well I looked around and saw that ITS COLOMBUS DAY!! NO SWIM :( :(. What in the world? That doesnt make sense..... No lap swimming because its Colomubs day? I guess if banks can be open then a pool cant be either. None the less I WILL do my track run tonigh..

As far as the swim goes im going to improvise and go play some tennis w/ John for he first time in weeks.

As I type im watching the Kona coverage from last year :) I cant wait to be there someday.....

Thought it was just a slipped chain or something like that but I pulled over and saw the chain hanging down :( Was SO looking forward to this ride today. I love riding those hills. Anyways, called my friend Lauren and she was nice enough to give me a ride home.
Got home and changed then headed to the pool. Was also really looking forward to this swim. It ended up being great. Those 5 X 75 sets w/ alt arms are awesome. Everytime I do them I can feel my self getting stronger and faster. Ive started to kick alot more, just w/o fins.

http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/108689_214370_2007.html
Well. Had absolutly no expectations for today. Got out there and just did what I love :) Competed in the open/elite wave. Actually won that division but was beat by an age grouper. So I technically got 2nd overall. But to compete overall you had to be in the open wave so I was awarded the overall winner award. I guess I take what im given right? Still a PR by 7-8 min w/ a LONG T1.

Race Summary:

Pre-Race:
Today I tried a good warm up. When I got to the race site I went ahead and set up in transition then went out for a nice 10min bike WU. Felt really good. It was mainly uphill the first few miles so it was nice getting to warm up right there. Got back to the transition and ran into Aaron. We went out for an EZ 10min WU. Was fairly rolling the first mile. On the way back we went through T1 and realized how hilly it was!! Finished setting up transition and headed to the swim start to get a swim in. Hopped in the water and swam out a bit. Felt awesome. Go out there and realized id swam farther than I thought. Got back to the ramp and talked to Scott a bit. It was time to race :)

Swim:
Was a deep water start, no wet suit. We jumped off a dock and I waded up to the start. The open wave only had about 25 people so that was really nice. Gun went off and things started smoothly. Grabbed on to the lead pack and realized they were moving too fast for me. Let them go and realized I was oviously swimming this one solo. Picked off a few people on the first lap. Started the second lap and that's when I started catching people. It started to rain just a bit there on the second loop. Most the people I was passing were WAY off course. I was right inline with all the bouys the whole time. Came to the last stretch and all the sudden the wind was picking up and the waves got a lot worse. Good thing I was breathing left side :) got to the last bouy and everyone else was taking a right for the last loop. Got bashed a few times. Had to fight my way through a few people. Don't think I made any friends :- /

T1:
LONG LONG LONG. Came out of the water totally alone. Once again it was awesome racing the open wave. Ran all the way to transition solo. Came to my rack... socks on... glasses... helmet... Sport legs and number. The whole time I was in T1 I could hear that same guy announcing. A fellow Team Ironhead member was shouting him my name and he didnt get it tell I was totally done.. and it wasn wrong a that.. ha. He thought I was taking salt tablets. :)

Bike:
Took a right out of transition and could see someone directly ahead of me. I just focused and got down into the position. The first 2-4 miles are a steady climb and into the wind. This was the area I had warmed up on and am happy i did. Came all the way down to the first right turn and by this point I had finally caught him. He turned out to be the only difficult one to find all day. I took the next right and we had a FLAT FAST w/ wind section back to the transition area. Everytime I hit this stretch it was 30+ mph in the 55. I was passing people like they were sitting still. The rest of the story goes something like this... 400 + sprint racers show up... wind uphill one direction... and tailwind flat the other way. Really fun bike course. Well.. until it filled up anyways. Being four loops it did get pretty crowded. When I caught the second guy he was wearing the speedo blue and red uniforms that TEAM USA is using this year. He was drafting BAD and when I FLEW past him I eyed him like no other. Letting him know good and well I knew what he was doing. Finally caught the few leaders and right after I passed them Im guessing the second place guy says... "I cant find the first place guy anywhere!!"

Ok... Well lets talk about a few problems with this statement. First off. The first problem is you're OBVIOUSLY going too slow if you cant catch him... And secondly "FIND" him? What is this? Hide and seek? Anyways.... I passed that guy... he hung on for a bit then I dropped him when we took the right off of the uphill section. Took two gels... one at the start, one at the end. Never caught the first place guy on the bike but he wasnt too far ahead.

T2:
Into transition I tossed the helmet down and put my shoes on and threw a few sportlegs in my mouth and was off. I think it was the 2nd fastest T2.

Run:
Came out of transition and was looking for some water because I hadnt swallowed my sportlegs just yet. Ran up a hill and saw an aid station where we turned on to the run. Grabbed a cup and it was Accerade!!! :( :( :( Threw it down in disgust and swallowed my sportlegs w/ dry mouth :(

*** DAY OFF ***

Well. Unscheduled day off... like most are right now. Maybe it was a good thing. Completely un-serious race sunday. So.. with that said im gonna throw out a few goals. :D

Swim: 23:00 or less
Bike: Sub 1:00
Run: Sub 42:00; Preferably sub 40 :D

HA! I know what you're thinking. What is he thinking?!? :) I think why not. I know at least one of those times is reachable. Im racing in the opne/elite wave which obviously goes off first so that should be nice knowing where all the real competition is. Scott and I are going to spend the night up by the race site so that we dont have to drive home after packet pick up then back the next morning @ 4am... :) Should be fun.

On a much more serious note there are a few things I want to address. The idea of "elitism". I read other "blogs" and training pages along with seeing different triathletes "social websites" .. aka facebook etc etc. First off I feel people need to remember that websites are NOT private, and that they can be read by anyone, so when you type someones name and then say something negative about them anyone can read that. Remember that. You're not better than that person... Cause in the end... they're probably faster than you. Or at least will be.

Now to address "elitism". Everyone knows my

Swim was w/ John and Jane again. It really is nice doing those sets w/ them because they're just brutal compared to what I normally do. I may start doing another set after they leave because they dont swim long enough for me.... Or I could just do a few 500s or 250s swimming... Im sure that wouldnt hurt anything.

http://www.doitsports.com/newresults3/client/181009_213409_2007.html

What a day. Worked last night and felt ok this morning so I decided id go ahead and race the 5K. Heres a quick rundown of how things went.

We lined up and I look around to check out the competition. All the sudden I spot about 5 CC kids, plus about 2 adults that look like possible comp. There was one kid that specifically stuck out in my mind... For grins we'll just call him "sock". ha. Gun goes off and I start at the very front with every intention to win. I was hanging in about third on a long uphill start. I was moving pretty quick but knew that if I was going to do this I had to break some people on the way... So near the top the hill I went. I quickly started to see their shadows fade off except for one. One kid had stuck w/ me. We crested the hill and started the descent. At this point we were really moving. He tried a few times to pull away but I just pushed w/ him. For about half a mile we were side by side. Basically rubbing arms. At the bottom there was an aid station. When wee came up on it the kid runs to grab some water. This was my chance. I take the only right on the course and push to pull away. I was pushing hard enough that I almost hit the back of the Pace Car. This is probably one of my favorite race moments of all time for me, because Ive never dug that deep. I was tired and probably not in the shape to be running a 5K at that pace but I was doing it. I could no longer hear him behind me so knew i had probably broken him. Hit the turn around and i could see a few people coming the other way. Half way done. Came back to the aid station and tried to drink but was moving too fast and the cups were too small. Started climbing back up the access road and knew I was slowing drastically. This is what they were waiting for. I could only hope that the guys behind me were slowing as much as i was because if they werent I was about to get passed. When I was almost to the top of the hill I could hear the pitter patter of feet behind me. I slowed just a bit because I knew he was going to catch me. Ran side by side for a few seconds and he slowed just a bit. Thats when i went... and never looked back. When I could see the finish thats when I threw it in one more gear. Thats what felt the best... After all of that, I still had something left. Thats the endurance triathlete way. Shame for them. Crossed the line in first place overall. New PR.

Whooo. What a smokin workout. Once again totally played today by ear and did what I wanted to do. All of my workouts in the past few days have been reasonably shorter but much more intense than other workouts. I really tried to come into that second bike tired, and then I tried once again to come off the second bike good and tired for that second run. I didnt intend on running that fast. When I got off the bike I was already going faster than planned but I was feeling good. I saw that I could break 1:30 for the workout and didnt think I had it.. but i was way wrong. Felt strong and did it. Felt great. I feel like im able to push way harder now... Push when I dont really feel like I have anything.

So, I found out about a 5K tommorow morning @ 8:30 in Waxahachie. Why does this matter? Well the overall winner plus the age group winners get a YEARS worth of FREEEE Chic-Fil-A!!! I know there has to be a catch but.... Why not give it a shot? I may be risking not feeling well at Stonebridge but Stonebridge isnt huge anyways... Im gonna see how I feel when I get off work... and If I dont feel too tired im doing it. The End.

Fantastic ride today. Did it on the road bike and focused on good form on the climbs and pushing hard all the way through. When it was flat I just focused on a steady Cad. and staying in control. Really felt strong... Felt like I was able to push and then recover REALLY well. I dont know if its possible to feel the effects of that interval ride yesterday but I felt good, and I can only contridute the ride to that workout.

Tuesday (9.18.07)

Cycle/Speed:

8:50 EZ WU
5:00 Sprint w/ 2:24r (23.76 mph)
4:36 Sprint w/ 2:37r (25.83 mph)
4:47 Sprint w/ 2:44r (24.84 mph)
4:34 Sprint (26.01 mph)
12:08 EZ CD

Total Time:
47:44:21

Had a blast doing these sprints today. First time since early in the year... like Duathlon season early. After this weekend I felt like my bike was lacking... I felt like I was already tired 10 miles into the ride. So Ive decided I need to do speed work on the bike. Or at least push my limits on the bike more often. Im bad about just doing long rides at a nice easy pace. Thats not working anymore... The guys I want to beat are fast. The reason the splits alternate from fast, slow. fast, slow are because the wind was with me one way and against me the other. Obviously.

Im obviously a few days behind on keeping up w/ my workouts. I have no intention of writing down my workouts leading up to HalfMax... because they're over now... and so is that race.

DNF'ing is something that ive contimplated since the first time I heard the term. Ive always wondered.... what leads to a DNF... what makes one want to DNF... or DNF in general. HalfMax was bad. Everything went wrong... Nothing went the way it was planned. People have been telling me... Well.. "You should have been prepared..." - "You should have had an extra tire..." Etc etc etc. The thing is... I DIDNT WANT TO RACE in those situations. The flat was a good thing. I was cold. Shaking... and miserable in general. Thats NOT how I want to race. When I pulled my wetsuit down after my 28ish minute swim I knew that wasnt going to work... I couldnt believe how cold I was.... My body was not prepared for those temps, and they're was nothing I could do to prepare myself for those temps. Shame I couldnt have gotten to the run... Because it would have been a half PR. Yep... I said it.

My workouts for the next two weeks or so arent going to planned out. Im going to wake up and do what I feel like. If I want to run.. Ill run... If I want to cycle, I cycle.. if I want to sprint... Ill sprint. Thats all there is to it. A week or two of unplanned workouts may help me get back to exercising to exercise... and not w/ a specific goal in mind.

As of right now, my last two tris of the year are rapidly approaching and im ready to have a solid race again. If neither of the Stonebridge tris have 500 im going to race the Oly.
I want to WIN try andys.

Today was a good day. Started out not so good... but I did a redemption run. Whats a redemption you ask? Its a run... in POURING as rain w/ the most dangerous lightning ive ever seen. 8 miles... w/ hills... negative splits. Thats a redemption run.

Plan for today? Was a (10-2)3. First off... Plan was to watch PM. Head to Lukes to grab my endurance... then head home and DO the brick. Well... watched Syd and some friends finish. (Congrats to everyone... AWESOME day w/ some tough conditions) Said hey to everyone and left about 1. I knew good and well I didnt have time to go to lukes and do a 3hr brick... So i decided to head home and decide on a workout on the way home. About halfway home I could tell it was going to POUR in a bit. Finally decided a run would be the best option... a 1hr run. Changed clothes... and hit the road. I started the run w/ no intentions or expectations. About 1.5 miles into the run the skies opened up and rain came down like ive never run in before. It was obviously stupid to be running in lightning that severe but this run had to be done... at any cost. I had to prove something to myself. I pushed and pushed through the rain. Came to mile 3.5 and i hear a honk behind me. John pulls up next to me in my car and yells at me to get in the car. I reply...

"Ive got 4 miles to go.... gotta workout....."

He rolls up the window and continues to point towards the passenger seat. I wasnt getting in that car for anything. I kept running. I was basicly running through a half inch to an inch of water at this point. I came to the house and switched out my bottle and took my gel. I took my left turn to Mont and started the "hilly" section. It was still pouring rain. I just kept pushing the pace. I felt AWESOME. This was what I needed.... I needed an obstacle to overcome... and the rain and lightning was just that. With my "taper" starting this week... I needed something. That was it.

Awesome run.

Tomm?
Getting up at 1... getting my Endurance.. Heading home and riding for 1.5hrs and then swimming an hr tomm night.

Saturday (9.8.07)

Unplanned Day OFF*****

So what do I say. Plan for today? Originally? 3250 swim and a (10-2)3. I was going to swim then go to Lukes and get my gat. endurance then head home to get the brick done. Decided to scratch the swim just to make sure I wasnt too tired for the brick that HAD to get done. Set the Alarm on my phone for 1:00.

Long story short? My phone is in military time.....

I woke up at 5pm.

No workout.

What am I doing?

Pathetic. Im seriously just dissapointed.... Few factors today. Few reasons I feel like morale is low and im having bad workouts.

-Completely out of Gatorade Endurance/Accelerade so im relying on gels.
-Possible peaked last weekend
-Its DAMN humid
-Rode the Tri bike w/ my 42/55 on my hill route because I didnt want to change a flat on the road bike
-BEING LAZY.

None the less.. Im not going to blame these factors for my bad workouts. I should have gotten more gatorade endurance along time ago. Today... I felt horrible. I NEVER should have taken the tri bike on that route.... Especially w/o proper nutrition. I deserved what I got today. I think overall... the fact that ive been waking up late... I know I dont have proper nutrition and I know im making stupid mistakes is weighing heavy on my mind..
Im setting HIGH goals for HalfMax and I know that this kind of mediocrity will not help me meet those goals. I think thats why im so disspointed in myself right now.
Im working too much and not getting enough sleep to do the workouts ive planned....

Once again not the planned workout. Did have a track run planned for today. Didnt happen before school, so when I got out of class way early I decided to head to the track. Well of course the football kids and CX girls were out running and working out so I didnt get to use the track. Headed home and ran w/ what I had. Still got my speedwork in but I feel like my drive to workout is not really there right now. Cant figure out whats going on..... Halfmax is soon......

Tuesday (9.4.07)

***Day OFF***

So here is my last hard week before my taper starting next Monday. I really need to focus on just pushing hard and getting all distractions out of my mind. I only have one more day of school this week (thur) then thats it for school till next Tues. I believe I work Thur, Fri, and Sund. Taking Saturday night off because PM is Sunday morning. Looks like tomm I have a HILLY 35 mile ride w/ a short run, then a 3500y swim @ the Mansfield Nat tomm night. Iknow I still need to do that 25-4-25-4 but what am I going to benefit more from?? That... or the ride and swim. I know I need to swim. Could I do both? : - O

************************************

Ok.. I thought it over. Going to do the 25-4-25-4. Ill swim at 2K tomm if I get the chance... but if not... Ill just swim Saturday. :- / Try to swim next week in the taper as well. Working after school is making it difficult to do anything Tues. or Thur... and I only take one day off a week.

Another great day. Ridiculously strong today. This route was absurd. There was no flat section. Negative splits really do feel good on a run like this. I woke up to lighting and thunder once again today! I went ahead and got some homeword done and waited for the thunder to die down. Im happy I got to do this entire workout since my (25-4)2 didnt work out :( Hopefully Wed....

Wayyyyy fast. Didnt plan on sub 7s for both runs. I woke up and it was pouring rain outside. I knew I was working tonight but I didnt need to sleep anymore so all i could do was wait the rain out. It did finally stop raining about 2hrs before I needed to get ready for work. So... off I went. I stepped out the door and the humidity hit me HARD. Started riding and still felt a little reluctant. It wasnt until the return 5 miles on the way back that I had a nice tailwind and I really started feeling comfortable and pushed the big 55. I did both runs in the flats. I love running in my flats. They feel so good. It seems nowadays im just looking for an excuse to run in them. My runs felt so smooth. I just focused ahead and enjoyed the pace. I never felt too worn down.... Thought the second bike was atleast a 21 pace but apparently I was a bit off. None the less Im happy I had a nice hard effort for 1.5hrs.

Plan for tommorow was to do a 25-4-25-4... and the rest of todays workout was supposed to be a swim. Problem is.... Ive just realized no pool is open on Labor day :( So i cant switch my swim to tomm... and I have wayyy too much school work to do a 3.5hr brick... So im going to drive over to Texas Plume in Cedar Hill and do hill repeats for a little more than an hr. See how bad I can make it hurt.... Halfmax is supposed to have crazy hills on the run... and I would like to be ready... I may move the 25-4-25-4 to wed. Because I stilll need to get that in.

12 days till HalfMax .........

Happy I ran today. Originally the plan was to do a track run this AM before school, but I did a really hard TR a few days ago and I dont think its necessary for me to put that strain on my body again.... Plus I had to get up at 6am to be at school by 8am. So.... I went w/ my gut instinct and did 6.4 around the house. Happy I did... and proud of myself for running in the dark. :)

So I think I have a 60mile ride planned for tomm and sat. : - / As of right now im not really feeling 60 miles tomm... and I know that if I dont feel like doing 60 tomm I really wont want to do it the next day after 60 the day before. Today I got minimal sleep.... And im afraid thats beginning to catch up to me. Im gonna see how I feel tomm when I wake up. Im doing at least 50.

Everytime I ride those new chain rings I love them even more. The 42 into the wind feels awesome. Im still able to push close to if not at 20mph. Was able to ride in the 55 alot more today. Was a little more used to it. RPMs were much higher than usual. Usually 80 or less. Thats another thing thath I notice with the new gears. Im always pushing a higher cadence. Not sure why yet.....

Longest pool swim ive ever done. Was really nice. Was trying to make up for not swimming yesterday. It went reallly well. The last 750 swim was a great idea. Pushed, but not too hard, and had negative splits all the way through.
The bike was AWESOME. I rode that crazy hard hill route through Cedar Hill. Took the road bike out and had a blast. I took the 3 bottles and used them all, much better than last time. Still had alot of energy towards the end of the ride and that felt great.

Good workout overall. Few things to cover. Was my first ride w/ my new 42/55 chain rings. Overall I absolutly LOVED them. Im not utilizing all of my gears, and not just my "53" ring. The 55 is crazy fast. With a tail wind you can fly. Hell... with a headwind flat you can still crank away. The 42 feels phenominal. The crank feels VERY solid and really stiff. Which is a +. I dont know if its because ive been riding that Allez so much or what but the bike felt really solid today.

So, about halfway through the first lap of 2, 24 mile loops I realized I forgot to take my sport legs :( I think in the long run this hurt me a bit. I was going to take some when I came back by the house @ mile 24 but forgot AGAIN! None the less, I started feeling some acid around mile 50 plus I was pushed for time ALOT. So I scrapped the last five miles and got my run in... which was also cut in half! Slightly frustrating... but a learning experience.. Felt really solid on the run. Stride felt smooooooth. :)

Wed Night Crit:
1st place / C Race
6 Laps of 1.1 miles = 6.6 miles

http://www.teambicyclesinc.org/Files/WNC%20Results%2008-22-07.pdf

Tonight was good but definitly an eye opener. First crash ive ever witnessed. WOW. Ill start from the start. We pulled off the line and I stayed right about mid pack until the first curve.. which was about 1 min into the race. I got out of the saddle and went hard. Of course they knew who I was so they chased. After about 2min I calmed down and let them ride back up to me. Then they all just sat RIGHT behind me. I slowed down to an unbearable pace of probably 15mph so that someone else would do the work. It worked. I got sucked back into the middle of the pack. Finished the first lap and I did the same thing again. Finished that lap and was too far in the back to pull that move again. I think they realized what I was doing at this point. I just hung out in the middle for this lap. We came back up to the finish and the group sped up as they usually do coming towards the line...
About mid-way through this lap I was riding about 3-4th back. The guy right behind the man pulling rubbed up against his wheel and started falling to his left. It went slow-mo from here. He just kept falling. His head

Well. Got up after 3hrs of sleep and got that swim in. Was a different set ive never tried before and it was alot of fun. His head SMACKS the ground and probably took most of the impact. Being right behind him I swerve HARD left and barely miss his head. About 4-5 people went right over him and fell as well. It was brutal. Major dominoe effect.. and makes me somewhat nervous to ride CAT 5 or the C race again. I didnt know what to do... No one stopped so I kept going. I didnt know how many of us were left. We chilled for a bit and came back around the finish. Everyone was chit-chatting just a bit about the wreck. We came back around to the wreck site and no one was there so Im assuming everyone was mobile. Once past that spot I decided id go for it... push as long and hard as possible and hope that no one could hang.
I went.... hard... for about 1 lap and the one guy was on me. I let him pull for a bit... and then we crossed the line for the last lap. We rode next to each other most of this lap... I knew good and well what this lap was about to come down to... and I didnt want that. So I thought we can at least ride side to side and just hope im stronger. We came around to about .5 mile left and I kinda sorta slipped in behind him.. He decided to go pretty early... I was just waiting for him to go.. When he did, I just hung out and then swung around him when he started slipping. He went so early I knew he wouldnt be holding that pace.

Also swam that morning. Good swim. Tried a new set and i liked it. Keeps my mind occupied and I didnt get bored at all :)

Im going to pull away a few times... and let them reel me back in... then ill break one last time... hard... and hopefully they wont chase... or if they do, hopefully they wont catch. I dont plan on coming home w/ less than 1st tomm.....

Overall... fun, relaxed workout today. (until the run) Rode w/ Syd out to Rockett and Palmer. The roads had been re-paved... and by re-paved I mean "Anti-Cyclists" re-paved. Its sooo annoying when PERFECTLY GOOD roads are reduced to chip seal.... roads that were once PERFECT for cycling are now almost unsafe... There goes peoples tax money towards things that arent needed. AT ALL. ** Rant Over ** The ride was nice. Pretty hot, but nothing compared to the wind. It was nice to have a hard head wind at times. Stopped once in Palmer for beverages, then again in Red Oak so that I could raise my seat. Im still adjusting that seatpost on the road bike since its been SO long.
I didnt start my watch again when we left Palmer so i dont have any bike splits. (had to use Syds) then didnt hit it again when I got to the driveway so a T1 time is missing :( yea yea... I know.
The run started out pretty relaxed but quickly started picking up. When I hit 2 miles I decided to push it a bit and brought the pace closer to 7:30s. Grabbed a fresh bottle at the gate and headed down Mont. for 2 miles. Was really feeling the heat at this point. I was desperate enough to pour Gatorade on my head! Ha. Last mile was 7:17 and that was holding back. Ive been working on holding back alot lately. As long as I know I have it.... I dont need to expose it......

Had alot more planned for today but none of that worked out. Was going to meet Wen @ B&B for a nice 2hr hill ride and he wasnt able to make that ride. So I decided I would just leave from the house. Hit the snooze a few times and finally got up. (worked the previous night) Was going to get the tri bike from the shop but since I was leaving from the house that didnt work out. Ended up riding the road bike to Midlo -> Cedar Hill -> Home. Was nothing special. Little windy at times.
Also had a swim planned at SMU but I called JK and found out that they're doing maintenance on that pool right now! Ugh! All the pools seem to be doing maintenence. None the less... that didnt happen. Ended up playing an hr of Tennis w/ John.

Really good swim today. Im never too excited about waking up after 3hrs of sleep and working all night to go and swim for an hr but today was great. Never felt tired. Tried some sets Ive never done before and it was nice. With these sets I end up doing 1500m worth of swimming and I think thats good. Not too much pulling/paddle going on. Nothing felt too fast. The pool was almost totally empty so that was nice.

Plan for tomm is to hopefully meet up when When and ride some hills from B&B for about 2hrs, then go swim 2K - 2.5K in the SMU outdoor 50m pool. Its the only pool open on Sunday plus its an outdoor 50m! How can I pass that up?!

Solid today. Of course I was riding the road bike again because I just dont have time to swing by B&B right now and have that new crank installed. Road out to Lake Ridge and did the plume and the Valley View. Both were a little harder than I would like... especially for being on a road bike. However strange it may be I actually felt better climbing on the QR earlier in the week... and that was double if not more than the climbing I did today.....
Plan was to get off the bike and run at my HalfMax race pace. (which I would like to be sub 7) Avg. pace for the run was 6:43. Just two miles but it felt good. My stride felt awesome and the longer I ran the more comfortable I got at that sub 7 pace. Ran in the flats just to see how they felt.. and because im sporting them at HalfMax. All around... good day.

Happy to finally get a nice long brick in. Wasnt as hot as it has been the past few days but was still well above 95... somewhere around 97-98. First run felt a little unsteady but quickly found my legs. Had to ride the road bike due to the crank issues, but I ordered my new Dura-Ace crank w/ a 55 tooth yesterday and B&B just called to let me know it arrived today! wow. So hopefully I can get that put on this weekend and get a nice 50 mile + ride in on Sunday. Wanted that last bike to be sub 30:00 but that road bike just doesnt get as aero as I do! Ha. Was a good, fun.. solid workout.

Wed Night Crit
C Race

Cycle:
~ 8 miles

Raced the C race in Ft. Worth again tonight! Really had a blast tonight... other than NOT winning. : - / I got used bad tonight. The other good riders out there had a plan and it worked out well. Know what the plan was called? "The Let Jacob Pull Plan" ..... And Jacob pulled... well.. not on purpose. Apparently they remembered me from the previous week, and knew that I could ride.. and that I could ride solo. So this time they were prepared for my break and werent going to let me just ride away. With about one lap to go I quickly realized this may come down to a sprint... and that wasnt what I wanted. I was going to anything I could to avoid a sprint. Tried to break once w/ 2 laps to go and they were right there on my wheel.. I broke the field up a bit, but not enough. Finally... We caught a break away and I had decided when I caught that guy that I would go. So we sucked him in and I went. HARD. Never looked back. Was about 100y from the finish and looked down and could see a shadow. Thats when I buckled. Had nothing left. Had pushed hard to drop em'. Afterwards a few of the guys came up to me and let me know that they were hanging on for dear life. Shame I couldnt have pushed just a bit more. I think I could have had em'.

Omg. Ive been planning on riding this course for awhile now. Had 30miles on the schedule for today. I had this route in my head and decided to do it despite distance. Was HILLY. Pace was probably between 17-18mph. Dont have avg. cad right now because my cad sensor is on my Stronglight (weaklight!) cranks that are no longer on my bike. Course was a blast though. Left the house around noon and it kept getting hotter all day. The final high for today was 104! Took 3 bottles w/ me and actually used 1 gel. By mile 30 my bottles were almost too hot to drink.

Finally got to swim in a pool! Whew! Its been almost 3 weeks. Felt really good up to 2500 and started to feel a little sloppy, but still felt good overall. 3250 felt pretty long. Took alot longer than planned. My rests shouldnt have been any more than :30. The last 250 was an EASY swim. Jst breast-stroked, back-stroked, and freestyled a bit.
